Exterior House Painting Preparation

Published by under Uncategorized

Introduction, Difficulty Level and Needed Tools:
The most important step in exterior house painting does not involve a paintbrush but rather paint scraping tools. Preparing the surface prior to painting your home will make or break your paint job. It is rarely the paint film itself that fails but rather the adhesion of the paint to the surface below (often called “substrate” in painting lingo). The reason paint fails to adhere is because the surface to which it was applied was dirty, wet or was loose itself. So making sure your paint surface is clean, dry, free from grease, oils and flaking or loose paint will give your primer and paint a good surface from which to bond. Painting the exterior of your house over a dirty or poorly prepared surface is like building a house on a bad foundation, and that’s never been a good idea.

Let’s review the tools you’ll need to get byour house ready for a paint job that will last many years.

Tallahassee Wood Rot Repair

Published by under Uncategorized

RiverKing Custom Painting are your local professionals for Tallahassee
wood rot repair. RiverKing Custom Painting gets the JOB DONE RIGHT
here in Tallahassee! The professional Tallahassee experts on repairing
Tallahassee wood rot are at RiverKing Custom Painting.

Tallahassee wood rot is a huge problem for busy Tallahassee homeowners
who defer Tallahassee home maintenance. While most problems start out
small, moisture in wood can travel in all directions requiring costly
repairs. Tallahassee wood rot occurs when there is wood and moisture.
The wood acts as a source of food for different types of fungus and
the moisture enables the fungus to break down the wood. Preservatives,
like those used in “pressure treated” wood, will help to preserve the
wood but even pressure treated deck posts buried two to three feet in
the ground will rot.

Tallahassee wood rot is most commonly found in areas of a Tallahassee
home that have more exposure to water. The vertical board under an
exterior door is one example. This wood experiences splash back when
water hits the first step below the door, and bounces back against the
kick plate. Unless a Tallahassee homeowner inspects this wood every
year and insures the wood is protected with Tallahassee paint, the
Tallahassee wood will rot and it may be difficult to see until several
years of damage have occurred.

Inspecting your Tallahassee home for Tallahassee wood rot should be
part of your overall home maintenance routine, done at least once a
year. In the spring you want to inspect your Tallahassee home’s
exterior to identify any damage suffered through the winter. Repairs
should be made quickly to stop things like Tallahassee wood rot from
extending beyond the initial problem as long term damage costs far
more to repair than minor problems.

It is also a good idea to visually examine the outside of your
Tallahassee home in the fall, to find potential problems that would be
better to correct when working conditions are better. For instance,
if you are cleaning your gutters each fall, this is the perfect time
to visually inspect all aspects of your Tallahassee home’s exterior.

Riverking Tallahassee Wallpaper

Published by under Uncategorized

Choose RiverKing Custom Painting for all of your Tallahassee painting
and Tallahassee wallpaper installation needs. RiverKing Custom
Painting gets the JOB DONE RIGHT here in Tallahassee! The professional
Tallahassee commercial
painters are at RiverKing Custom Painting.

Removing Tallahassee wallpaper can be one of the most difficult
projects to undertake in the process of decorating your Tallahassee
home. Sizing the wall to be papered is so important. The paper will
adhere better to a properly sized wall and most important it makes
removal of your old wallpaper so much easier!

New Tallahassee wallcovering can transform a room, going from boring
to beautiful. But before you can determine the best approach to
removing Tallahassee wallpaper, you need to know the type of
Tallahassee wallcovering and the type of wall surface that’s under the
Tallahassee wallpaper.

In most cases, walls are either drywall or plaster smoothed over lath.
You can usually tell what you have by the feel or by tapping on it.
When in doubt, remove an outlet cover to see the exposed edge.

If the Tallahassee wallpaper doesn’t peel off, or if only the
decorative surface layer peels off, you must saturate the Tallahassee
wallpaper or the remaining backing with water and Tallahassee
wallpaper remover solvent and then scrape it off. Drywall is more
vulnerable to water damage; you must avoid over wetting it. And use
care when you’re scraping because drywall gouges more easily than
plaster.

Some papers, such as foils or those coated with a vinyl or acrylic
finish, are not porous. If you’re removing such Tallahassee
wallpapers, you must scratch, perforate, or roughen the entire surface
to permit the solution to penetrate below the nonporous surface to the
adhesive. You can test for porosity by spraying a small area with hot
water and wallpaper remover. If the paper is porous, you should see
the paper absorb the water immediately. After the paper is wetted, you
can scrape it off.

Now that you know what you’re dealing with, you can choose an
appropriate removal technique for the entire surface. Depending on
your situation, choose one of three Tallahassee wallpaper-removal
approaches: dry-stripping, wallpaper remover, or steam.
The technique you use for removing the old Tallahassee wallpaper
depends on what kind of paper you’re taking down and what kind of
surface is underneath.

Allow the pros at RiverKing Custom Painting to make the entire
Tallahassee wallpaper removal and Tallahassee wallpaper installation
process as easy as possible for you.

Cabinet refinishing, Refacing, Replacing

Published by under Uncategorized

RiverKing Custom Painting can give your kitchens and bathrooms a face
lift with Tallahassee cabinet refinishing, Tallahassee cabinet
refacing, and Tallahassee cabinet replacement!

A new kitchen or bathroom is possible with Tallahassee cabinet
refinishing. Kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities can be dressed up,
revitalizing an old kitchen or bathroom. Plus, depending on the
condition of the wood cabinets, this task can be easy. Tallahassee
cabinet refinishing is a great way to save money and still have a
beautiful or unique kitchen. Many decorative effects can be achieved
during any Tallahassee cabinet refinishing project, especially with
paint. A different color on the doors or a crackle finish is just a
couple of examples.

The overall look and feel of your kitchen or bathrooms can be
dramatically changed and improved by either revitalizing the current
finish or refinishing with paint or stain. It is very possible to
combine new doors and drawer fronts with Tallahassee refinishing
cabinets for a truly new design. This will bridge the gap between a
full refinish and refacing, saving you money and still giving you a
new look. The next best alternative to refinishing is refacing.
Although Tallahassee cabinet refacing is cheaper than all new
cabinets, it is still considerably more expensive than Tallahassee
cabinet refinishing.

Tallahassee cabinet refacing involves the replacement of the door and
drawer fronts (with new) plus installing a veneer of new wood over the
existing cabinets. This is done with your existing countertops in
place, no need to replace them if they are in good shape. Refacing is
typically more expensive than refinishing your cabinets but, it is
still considerably cheaper than a full replacement of your cabinets.

The cost of replacing kitchen cabinets can be very high. Homeowners
can easily spend several thousands of dollars on new cabinets. This
type of work is a kitchen or bath remodel and involves the replacement
of the countertops. Since the amount of work is extensive, this is
your most expensive option. If your cabinets and countertops are very
bad shape, a full replacement is best.

Tallahassee cabinet refinishing is very affordable and a great project
that can involve many aspects of Tallahassee wood refinishing and
repair. With a kitchen or bathroom that looks new, you will be the
envy of everyone.

Give your Tallahassee business or Tallahassee residential property the
professional advantage. Have your local Tallahassee commercial
painters at RiverKing Custom Painting show you what it’s all about.

Peeling Paint Due to Interior Moisture

Published by under Uncategorized

Symptoms: Peeling Paint Due to Interior Moisture Under Paint Film
Peeling of interior paint due to moisture is characterized by cracking and gentle peeling away of the paint from the substrate as it loses adhesion due to the moisture. Moisture originating from behind the paint film or in front and forcing its way through the paint film can create this type of paint failure.

Potential Causes:

  • High humidity areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, hot tubs, wet basement areas and the like can create humidity that penetrates the paint film from the front.
  • Leaking flashing around a chimney or other exterior wall / roof intersection can allow water to seep into the house and wet the plaster from behind the paint film causing the paint to separate from the substrate.

Possible Repairs:

  • Ventilate high moisture areas such as bathrooms by providing an exhaust vent fan that removes humidity and discharges to the outside.
  • Ensure proper ventilation of the roof and walls and soffits.
  • Repair missing or damaged flashing at chimney or other wall / roof connections.
  • Scrape away old peeling paint and feather sand affected areas.
  • Spot prime bare area.
  • Paint with high quality acrylic latex paint.

Peeling Paint Due to Exterior Moisture

Published by under Uncategorized

Symptoms: Peeling Paint Due to Exterior Moisture Under Paint Film

As mentioned in the previous section, peeling paint is a very common paint problem that can be caused either by moisture or poor adhesion. Peeling due to moisture is recognizable by large peeling sections of paint exposing bare wood underneath. Unlike peeling due to adhesion problems where peeling may be spotty, with moisture related peeling larger areas peel away often around windows, doors and gutters.

Potential Causes:

* Moisture getting behind paint film from failing or missing caulk, leaks in roof or wall systems or being too close to the ground.

* Faulty guttering or missing ventilation causing ice dams or water back up.

* Painting when the surface being painted is wet from condensation or rain.

Possible Repairs:

* Ensure proper drainage of gutters and downspouts flowing away from home.

* Eliminate cause or source of moisture by installing exhaust fans, soffit vents, siding vents, louvers, fans, and dehumidifiers.

* Repair and replace missing or damaged caulk.

* Scrape away old peeling paint and feather sand affected areas.

* Spot prime bare area.

* Caulk as required with appropriate caulking product.

* Repaint with a high quality acrylic latex house paint.
